Start the new Garden Year Sonny.

And Lets Hope and Pray for a good garden year. 2 Bad in a row is pretty disheartening.

I have the Rupp cataloge and not sure if anything else is here or not.

Lima Beans bagged and ready for freezer

Sweet Onions bagged for storage

Here are pictures of our special pie pumpkins, as promised.

Pumpkin pie two

Old style canning pumpkins are from one plant that came from (it had to be) 30 year old seed. The pictures are of two of the three pumpkins this plant produced. We cooked the other one, it made enough pumpkin puree to make 8 large deep dish pies.

New style canning pumpkins are much smaller and creamier in texture. We call them Libby Wannabees! (as close to Libby canners as you will ever get because of their policies to keep their seed secret.)

Used the new style pumpkin to make the pumpkin puree for the two pies pictured, that used the whole pumpkin.

We saved seed from both styles.

Picked thirty rows of the thirty-two rows of chicken corn, by hand (as we didn't get the picker operational in order to use). Around 50 bushels this year, not bad for not having any water.

We have about 40 laying hens to feed. We harvested about a dozen roosters and gave about 40 away, plus we now have (it started out as) 14 yard birds running around.

Looking back it has been quite a season. All in all, we came out with a decent quantity and quality of produce from our garden and donated several truckloads to our local mission.

Truck load of produce--watermelon, cantaloup, potatoes, onions, summer squash

Another truckload

Not pictured, but they also received, truckloads of sweet potatoes, some beans, cabbage and everything else we got to grow. Since the chickens started laying we have also given them over 80 dozen eggs. They do seem to appreciate what we donate to them.

We will close the 2012 garden thread with this picture of roses grown in our garden/yard. We hope you enjoyed this years garden thread as much as we enjoyed sharing it with you. Thanks; Sonny and Virginia

Boy Sonny you dug some real monster potatoes and turnips!

I guess that makes up for some of the other stuff that did not work out.
